What Is Proposition 65?
Proposition 65, formally the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law approved by voters in November 1986. It requires the State of California to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. The list is updated at least once a year and includes more than 800 chemicals.
The law requires businesses to provide a clear and reasonable warning before knowingly and intentionally exposing anyone in California to a listed chemical. Listed chemicals include a wide range of metals, plastics, dyes, solvents, and other substances, both naturally occurring and synthetic.
